Possible 2020 R&R HOF Inductions

$

0
It's not even 2020 yet and already predictions are being made as to who will be inducted into these "hallowed" halls. I only use the air quotes because the people who make the decision as to who gets in and who does not must not know music. Sometimes I do not understand their thinking process

Each year, the nomination committee goes through an extensive list of people that deserve to be in there in addition to musicians who have been around long enough to warrant interest. Sometimes, though, good musicians slip by unnoticed. To be eligible for this honor, a musician must be around for at least 25 years after their first album was released. But there are questions that have people scratching their heads each time. "Is commercial success worth more than one's influence on other artists? Does a band's longevity play a role in HOF credentials?"

Here is what Ultimate Classic Rock is predicting for the 2020 inductions. They have been broken down into Newly Eligible and Eligible

Newly Eligible

Oasis
-1994 saw their debut album Definitely Maybe skyrocket on to the charts. Then along comes 1995's (What's the Story) MorningGlory and it completely obliterates the charts. Fans of theirs in England described the hype surrounding them as being a bit like Beatlemania, a band who Oasis is said to have respect for and an obsession with. Unfortunately, there was infighting inside the band. Brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher fought incessantly and because of that, their last show was in 2009, when the band called it quits. Even then, the brothers Gallagher were still fighting. Perhaps their induction will force a truce?
Sleater-Kinney
-This very unheard of by some band is being considered for induction. Formed in 1994 in Olympia, Washington, this all female band is definitely among one of the many all girl bands. Their music was strongly influenced by punk and lyrics surrounding the topic of feminist issues, with energetic live shows. They took a nine year hiatus and returned with 2015's No Cities to Love
Weezer
-This is a alternative band through and through. The reason behind their longevity is that they write consistently good songs and they are successful. Their debut album was one that was eagerly anticipated throughout the 1990s. Since their 1994 formation, the band has 23 songs on the Top Alt-Rock Charts. Of course, unlike some bands, these guys have a near punishing tour schedule. They are pretty high up on the newly eligible chart, up near #1 probably.
Korn
-These guys might not be everyone's cup of tea, but they are successful none the less. They might be metal, but when singer Jonathan Davis does a slow song and it gives you chills, that's when you know and realize just how good a singer he is. Any singer can go from screaming to ballads, but it takes real talent to go from near screamo metal to singing a low voice to a slow ballad like he does. Despite the fact that nu-metal is the black sheep of the metal family, the source of jokes among metal fans, calling it "not metal" and other like-minded insults and its success going down in years past, the genre had an upturn around the peak of the new millennium. These guys took all that metal stood for-screaming guitars, heavy drums and aggressive singing-and turned it up to 20, giving them their own sound. They are also one of the many bands who can successfully combine genres together to be even more successful. They have managed to combine hip-hop and rock, with people like DMX, Ice Cube, Method Man.
Notorious B.I.G.
-Normally, a lot of people don't think rap should be here. But, for someone like him, the reason is probably he was one of the bigger innovators of rap music, who knows. When Tupac Shakur was inducted in 2017, despite his passing, they also felt it was their duty to nominate him. Shakur and Biggie were inseparable. They got caught up in the ironically coined "Coastal Rap Wars", coined to a time when there was an explosion of rap music from both the East and West coasts. Despite only releasing two albums- 1994's Ready to Die and 1997's Life After Death, both went platinum. Tragically, Shakur and Biggie were killed only months apart. It seems ironic that the two albums Biggie did make almost seem to foreshadow his passing with their names. Something not everyone knows is that the Notorious B.I.G. (birth name Christopher Wallace) had brought rap/hip-hop culture to the forefront. Although what would make his honorary induction even more special is if the induction ceremony took place in his hometown of Brooklyn, New York instead of Cleveland, Ohio
Eligible

Foreigner (Eligible since 2002)
-OH PLEASE LET THEM GET IN! THEY'RE ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS!!
-This band has seen more lineup changes than any other band. There are theories about why they don't get inducted. One common one among fans is that the music hall looks down on arena-rock bands that became famous in the 1970s and 1980s. While bands like Def Leppard, Bon Jovi and Journey have been inducted, Foreigner continues to sit outside like bad kids waiting for a lecture from the principal. They have been eligible since 2002, with a success that almost no one can match. They are one of the Top 50 Best Selling Artists of All Time. Their music is constantly reaching new generations of fans who were not even around when they became popular. Will 2020 be their year?
Iron Maiden (Eligible since 2004)
-OH PLEASE, OH PLEASE LET THEM GET IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FINGERS CROSSED!!!!!!!!!!!!
-These guys have been around since 1975. Their live shows put other bands to shame. Despite the fact their music NEVER gets played on the radio, fans still gush about how much they love the men of Maiden. These guys have set records no other band has been able to accomplish or beat. Maiden has done concerts in some of the most far-reaching corners of the world. They have been eligible since 2004, but what might be holding them back from the hallowed halls is a snub made by vocalist Bruce Dickinson, whose words included "an utter and complete load of bollocks. It's run by a bunch of sanctimonious bloody Americans who wouldn't know rock 'n' roll if it hit them in the face." His overall disinterest in the hall of fame has people worried. He has even claimed that "if you put [music] in a museum, then it's dead." Despite their singer's strong opinions, fans are still rallying for the famous East Enders to make it in there. And if they do, fans and even the band's famed mascot Eddie will be celebrating!
Doobie Brothers (Eligible since 1996)
-This is a long time to be eligible and still not make it in. WTF? These guys are considered to be one of the most successful bands to combine easy rock and harmonies. It doesn't matter what age you are, anyone can quickly become a fan of these easy-listening guys. With so many great songs out there getting radio airplay, it's shocking to think these guys are not in there already. Hopefully 2020 sees this band getting in!
Motorhead (Eligible since 2002)
-I'm not even a fan of Motorhead and I'm rallying for these guys to get it!
-This band is like no other. They live like gypsies, moving around so much from place to place on tour. Their energetic stage shows, gravelly-voiced vocalist/bassist singing about promiscuous sex, gambling and addictions have fans rallying for the men of Motorhead to enter these halls. These guys have successfully blended punk with metal, a feat no one thought was possible or should be possible! The albums that took them to the tops of the metal charts included Ace of Spades, Overkill, Bomber. Over the years, they have released 22 chart-topping albums and with each day that passes, new generations of fans are discovering these breakneck guitar-shredding legends. These guys have a lot going for them. For one thing, former Nirvana drummer but current Foo Fighters guitarist/frontman Dave Grohl is on the nomination committee in addition to Metallica guitarist/frontman James Hetfield. Both are strongly lobbying for Motorhead to enter. With the death of bassist/frontman Ian Fraser Kilmister aka "Lemmy" Kilmister in 2015, this only shined the spotlight on this band and why they were not here. With both Hetfield and Grohl on the nomination committee, it's a strong and certain fact that these guys should be getting in!!
Judas Priest (Eligible since 1999)
-OH PLEASE! OH PLEASE LET THEM GET IN! FINGERS CROSSED!!!
-Most artists nowadays have an "I don't care" attitude towards the rock and roll hall of fame. Judas Priest has made no secret of their desire to get in, especially front man Rob Halford. "Personally, I would love it. I think we deserve it. We put 10,000 hours in and more - and beyond that, we just feel that heavy metal deserves more space in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame." He said this after learning of the band's rejection in 2017. The writing is on the wall - with over 50 million albums sold worldwide, hugely successful world tours and the mind-blowing amounts of bands who are inspired by them, it's no small feat to accomplish. Not only that, but the Judas Priest fanbase is probably the biggest one out there lobbying for the leather-clad legends to get in!
Nine Inch Nails (Eligible since 2014)
-I honestly thought these guys were already in
-These guys are said to be the innovators of industrial rock. 2014 was the year they officially became eligible. They've sold millions of albums, done countless world tours and have a rabid fan base, it's no wonder these guys are being considered. Their 1989 album Pretty Hate Machine and 1994's The Downward Spiral are considered to be their most influential albums to this day. Trent Reznor has, to this day, been considered an inspiration by people such as David Bowie, Alice Cooper and Peter Gabriel. Unfortunately, like the case of Iron Maiden, where front man Bruce Dickinson snubbed the hall, NIN front man Trent Reznor repeated the same issue in 2018. He stated he couldn't "honestly give a shit" about the hall of fame
King Crimson (Eligible since 1994)
-These guys are one of the more well-known progressive rock bands. One of their greatest and most well known albums is In the Court of the Crimson King. These guys are virtual unknowns in the US because you'll never hear their songs on the radio. They've never had an album reach platinum status. They've never headlined any major festivals. For them, R&R HOF induction is more about musical impact and less about commercial success. These guys have had some major inspiration on bands that have come to be known as their contemporaries-Rush, Genesis and Yes. And even recent bands such as Tool, Mastodon and The Flaming Lips will even mention these guys played heavily into creating their own sounds. If the hall of fame wants innovative musicians, look no further than King Crimson!
Todd Rundgren (Eligible since 1995)
-This guy is certainly unusual in his music. His music can't just be put in one box. His music is a combination of various genres. Over the course of his career, he has released 25 under his own name, 9 with a band called Utopia and 3 connected to a 60's-era band called Nazz. And in addition to being a great musician, he's also helped produce albums for some of music's biggest names, such as The Band, Grand Funk Railroad, Hall and Oates, Cheap Trick, XTC. His induction would be one of the more interesting ones.
Warren Zevon (Eligible since 1994)
-Is it strange and/or I'm the only person that thought he was black because of his singing voice?
-His best known hit is the 1978 song "Werewolves of London". He released twelve studio albums, starting with 1976's self-titled debut. He's had a dozen or more musicians guest on his albums, including Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Glenn Frey and Don Henley. So IDK about you, but I do believe this man deserves an induction, don't you think?
"Weird Al" Yankovich (Eligible since 2004)
-This guy certainly lives up to his name. He's not known for doing regular songs. No, he's known for parodying songs. And it's sometimes hilarious to the point of crying from laughter. A lot will say that his success has come from parodying other songs, but he does have some original work laying around. I certainly think he deserves a shot at induction.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)

$

This is a more updated version of the story. This movie is a lot closer to the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl than the original 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was. At least, that's what my sister thinks. While I do agree with her, this updated version was directed by Tim Burton, so if you watch it, expect to see Johnny Depp and expect a weird movie.
Summary
-Mysterious confectioner Willy Wonka decides, after nearly being closed to the public for years, to let five children in to his factory to see the wondrous factory in all its glory. Complete mayhem will ensue as four of the brattiest children alive win the tickets and the last winner is a humble young boy named Charlie Bucket.

Did You Know?
-The lollipops on the trees, the giant humbugs and the giant pink sugar canes were made of real candy

-The country in which this movie is supposed to take place is supposed to be an ambiguous country between the United States and England. This is even represented in the money. The coin that Grandpa Joe gives Charlie to buy a chocolate bar is a US silver dollar

-Another example of the cross between the US and England place of location is that there is London architecture, street layouts, accents with American clothing styles, American mailboxes, terminology and American fire hydrants. Another unique thing is that Charlie and his parents all speak with an English accent

-The only ticket not found by one of the five children is the ticket for Veruca Salt. Her father finds a ticket for her

-One of Tim Burton's famous trademarks is the use of black and white stripes. This can be seen in the scene during the Augustus Gloop song; the Oompa Loompas are wearing suits with black and white stripes and there is black and white striped candy in the main room

-At one point, Mr. Teavee makes a comment about Willy Wonka being "a few quarters short of a buck" while Mr. Salt replies that he doesn't "speak American". Ironically, the actor who plays Mr. Teavee, Adam Godley, is English

-In real life, cocoa beans are very bitter. In order to make them taste like actual chocolate, sugar and other ingredients must be added

-This was the first movie where not only Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter collaborated, but so did Sir Christopher Lee and Tim Burton

-Originally, the role of Violet Beauregard was supposed to go to Taylor Momsen. Unfortunately, she was not considered for the role because she was considered too glamorous to play a rude, arrogant tomboy

-Some of the actors considered for the role of Mr. Teavee included Dan Castelleneta, who's famous for voicing Homer Simpson among other characters on The Simpsons, Kurtwood Smith, who's famous for playing Red Foreman on That '70s Show, Ed O'Neill, who's famous for playing Al Bundy on Married...With Children.

-When you first see Willy Wonka, he says "Good morning, Starshine. The earth says hello". This is a nod to the musical Hair. There is a song with that title in it

-Filming took six months, due to British Equity rules, which stated that children could only work four and a half hours per day

-Some of the actors considered for the role of Grandpa Joe included Christopher Lloyd, David Warner, Max von Sydow, Richard Griffiths (for those not familiar with this name, Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter series), Sir Richard Attenborough

-During the scene where Prince Pondicherry's chocolate palace starts melting, the first drop to hit falls on his face in the shape and position of a bindi, which is a dot worn by both men and women to signify their social class, marital status and religion

-Tim Burton wanted the chocolate river in this film to be thick, like real chocolate, unlike the 1971 film

-Johnny Depp and Sir Christopher Lee appeared in two other movies together: 2005's Corpse Bride and 1999's Sleepy Hollow.

-Deep Roy, who did most if not all of the Oompa-Loompa roles, says he is a self-described bad dancer and singer. He did not do his own singing

-The forty squirrels in the nut room were real squirrels. They were trained for ten weeks before filming. In fact, their training began when they were newborns, being fed by bottle to develop relationships with human trainers. My sister would die happy knowing this; she loves and I mean LOVES squirrels!!!
-Johnny Depp stated he based his costumes on Marilyn Manson's album The Golden Age of Grotesque

-The house used for Charlie's house was author Roald Dahl's former house in Great Missenden, in Buckinghamshire, England.

-Freddie Highmore had gotten the role of Charlie Bucket thanks to Johnny Depp, who was so impressed with Highmore's performance in Finding Neverland.

-The toothpaste factory Charlie's father works for is Smilex Toothpaste. In the 1989 film Batman, also directed by Tim Burton, Smylex was the poisonous gas created by The Joker

-In the room with the "three course gum" machine, there are large machines that look like rotating drums filled with colorful balls. These are real machines used to make jawbreakers

-Dr. Wonka (Sir Christopher Lee) tells young Willy (Blair Dunlop) that some kids are allergic to chocolate to discourage him from eating it. Ironically, Johnny Depp is allergic to chocolate

-During one of the flashbacks, young Willy Wonka is seen wearing a huge head brace in addition to braces. This was not in the original story. This was actually taken from Tim Burton's childhood

-Grandma Georgina, played by Liz Smith, stated in an interview that she read the scripts for both of the grandmothers and she chose the grandmother who kissed Johnny Depp. She said "it was lovely"

-Each song sung by the Oompa-Loompas are in a different style. The song sung during the scene with Mike Teavee is rock, where Willy says "on with the tour" in a reference to rock concert tours. The song during Violet's scene where she blows up is a disco song, where Willy replies "Come on, let's boogie!" During the scene where Veruca gets dragged to the incinerator is psychedelic, Beatles-type music. Willy responds "Well, let's keep on truckin'". During the Augustus Gloop scene, the song is Broadway Musical-type because Willy is clapping and praising the show

-Some of the actors considered for the role of Willy Wonka include Rowan Atkinson, an English actor known for playing Mr. Bean, John Cleese of Monty Python fame, Eric Idle, also of Monty Python fame, Mike Myers, Michael Palin (Monty Python). It was even suggested for an English comedian to play the role, such as Eddie Izzard or David Walliams

Judas Priest Bassist Ian Hill Wants to Tour with Iron Maiden

If this happens, which will make all my metal concert dreams come true, me and my sister shall be there. Oh yes, we shall be there!!
During the 1980s, Judas Priest were on the rise as one of metal's premier names. Iron Maiden were certainly on their way up as well, going from the punk-y sound of Paul Di'Anno to the more sweeping vocal acrobatics of Bruce Dickinson. Iron Maiden were one of the most frequent opening acts for Priest and even though the relationship between the two bands started out rocky and jagged, no doubt years later the bands would become best friends with each other. Priest bassist Ian Hill has hopes that the two bands can tour together while the members are alive and still able to.

"There’s always the big question of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. That would be really interesting if we could get that together before some of us die. It’d be great! You run into these people over the years. We’ve played with quite a few of them, but we’ve got to get together with Iron Maiden." Ian told Audio Ink Radio in an interview.

Iron Maiden's first time with Priest was in 1980 when Priest was touring British Steel and Maiden was touring their self-titled debut album. A year later, Priest had, once again, selected the London metallers Iron Maiden to open for them. Priest was touring Point of Entry while Maiden was touring Killers, the last album to feature vocalist Paul Di'Anno. For the time being, both bands are sweeping across the world on their own tours. Judas Priest is continuing their Firepower tour while Iron Maiden is on the North American leg of their Legacy of the Beast tour.

For Priest, this is the first time that the band has toured without longtime guitarist Glenn Tipton. Glenn has been fighting with his diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease and to fill the shoes he left, producer Andy Sneap stepped in. In an interview with The Void with Christina, Andy said "I'm just filling in, really. They asked me to help out, so it was a case of jumping in and doing what I could do. I'd had a year in the studio with them — I was doing Accept and Saxon at the same time — so it's been good for me to step away from the studio, because mentally, I was getting a little bit burnt with that, if I'm honest. To be able to step back and still do something this size and musical has been great. Where it's going to go? I've got no idea. We haven't even discussed it. It's been, 'Andy, can you do this tour? Can you help us out here?' That's fine."

-Al Martino: Johnny Fontane
-Morgana King: Mama Corleone
-Lenny Montana: Luca Brasi
-John Martino: Paulie Gatto
-Salvatore Corsitto: Bonasere
-Alex Rocco: Moe Green

Did You Know?
-Marlon Brando had pulled a prank on some of the actors in the scene where they are carrying him up the stairs. He had put weights under himself to make it harder for them to carry him up the stairs
-Oranges seem to play a big part in this movie, telling of an imminent death or near death to a Corleone family member

-In the scene where Michael pledges himself to his father, the tears in Marlon Brando's eyes were real, according to Al Pacino, who played Michael

-Marlon Brando had based his low spoken, raspy voice on real life mobster Frank Costello.
-For the scenes where Michael was in exile in Italy, the town of Savoca, outside of Taormina in Sicily, were used. The only reason that Corleone, Sicily was not used is because the town was too developed, even by 1970s standards, to look like something from the 1940s

-Ironically, Al Pacino's grandparents had emigrated from Corleone, Sicily to America just as Don Vito had

-During the scene in the restaurant where Michael meets Sollozzo, subtitles couldn't be used because Sollozzo speaks Sicilian too quickly. What he says is "I am sorry. What happened to your father was business. I have much respect for your father. But your father, his thinking is old-fashioned. You must understand why I had to do that. Now let's work through where we go from here." When Michael returns from the bathroom, he continues in Sicilian with, "Everything all right? I respect myself, understand, and cannot allow another man to hold me back. What happened was unavoidable. I had the unspoken support of the other family dons. If your father were in better health, without his eldest son running things, no disrespect intended, we wouldn't have this nonsense. We will stop fighting until your father is well and can resume bargaining. No vengeance will be taken. We will have peace. But your family should interfere no longer."

-The movie was originally going to be titled The Godfather, but Francis Ford Coppola thought that Mario Puzo, who wrote the novel, deserved credit. So he retitled the movie Mario Puzo's The Godfather

-Mobster Moe Greene was modeled after Jewish mobster Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel. Even though Siegel never wore glasses. Both people were shot through the eye and the glasses worn by Greene made it easier to capture that effect

Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel
-Initially, Francis Ford Coppola did not want to hire his sister Talia Shire for the movie. It's because he did not want to be accused of nepotism. He felt she was too pretty for the role of Connie Corleone. She only got to audition for the role at Mario Puzo's request

-The reason why Michael's son is named Anthony is because in real life, the three year old playing him is Anthony Gournaris, responded best when called by his name

-Sylvester Stallone, who at this point had just started acting, auditioned for the roles of Paulie Gatto and Carlo Rizzi, but did not get either role. Instead he tried his hand at writing a movie and did so with the successful The Lords of Flatbush. Ironically, Talia Shire would later go to fame as Adrian in the Rocky series

-When Michael is in exile in Sicily, you see him wiping his nose with a handkerchief. The novel explains that when police chief McCluskey punched him, it damaged his sinuses

-To make his face look bruised, Al Pacino wore a latex piece on his cheek to simulate the effect of being punched

-When James Caan uses the phrase "bada-bing", he got it from his acquaintance, real life mobster Carmine Persico, known as "The Snake" and he used it in the film

Carmine "The Snake" Persico
-Ironically, Jewish actors Abe Vigoda and James Caan played Italian characters Salvatore Tessio and Sonny Corleone while Italian actor Alex Rocco played a Jewish character named Moe Greene

-During the scene where Michael is confronted by Captain McCluskey, the officer who remarks at arresting Michael is NYPD detective Sonny Grosso, who was involved with the famous "French Connection" case

-Mario Puzo, who wrote the novel the movie is based on, had based Don Vito's personality on his own mother's while the character of Don Vito was based on New York mob bosses Joe Profaci and Vito Genovese. In the novel, many of the incidents are based on real life occurrences that happened to Profaci and Genovese

Joe Profaci
Vito Genovese
-During the scene where Carlo is beating Connie and she is destroying the ceramics, she lost a shoe. Rather than stop and search for it, she continued, at the risk of cutting her foot

-In the scene where Michael speaks to Apollonia's father about asking her out on a date, his dialogue was supposed to be in Sicilian, like in the novel. Unfortunately, Al Pacino did not speak Sicilian fluently and could not learn to speak the dialogue in the language so quickly. Instead, it was changed to where he had Fabrizio translate what Michael said into Sicilian

-In order to better understand his character and the underworld lifestyle, James Caan hung around mobsters and other criminals

-Several Italian words are used throughout the movie. Paulie says "sfortunato", which translates into "unlucky guy". Michael says that Tom is a "consigliere" or "consultant, advisor". Vito calls Johnny Fontaine a "finocchio", which is an offensive term for a homosexual. Sonny refers to Paulie as "stronzo", which translates into "a--hole", Carlo and Connie both say "vaffanculo" or "f--- you", Don Zaluchi describes the sale of drugs to children as "infamia" or "infamy" and both Don Corleones refer to "big shot" or ".90 caliber" as being "pezzo novanta"

-Jack Woltz, the Hollywood director in the movie, is based on Warner Bros. chief Jack L. Warner. His personality, however, was based on MGM head Louis B. Mayer. Mayer was a notorious racing aficiando with his own racing stable and prize horse. He quit horse racing after finding out his son in law, William Goetz, got caught up with the mob and fixed races

-Ardell Sheridan, the actress who plays Mrs. Clemenza, did not reveal until 1985 that Gambino mob boss Paul Castellano had visited the set and spoken with Richard S. Castellano, who played Clemenza. Of course, after Paul Castellano was killed in 1985, Richard revealed that the man was her uncle.

-When Sonny is shot to death, one of the killers kicks him in the face. This is a strong clue that it was Connie's husband Carlo who set it up because when Sonny beat up Carlo, he kicked Carlo in the face

-In addition to the source novel, many of the characters in the film are based on members of Francis Ford Coppola's family

-During the scene where Sonny is with Lucy, the actress who plays her, Eleanor Coppola, went into labor. Francis Ford Coppola went to the hospital after the scene was done to meet his new daughter Sofia

-In the scene where Tom meets up with Sollozzo in the abandoned diner, the snowstorm raging outside when they leave is real

-Francis Ford Coppola's wife Eleanor was the inspiration for Diane Keaton's character Kay Adams

-After the scene where Michael was punched in the face, Al Pacino had his jaw wired shut for a short time

-Out of all the cast members, some share birthdays. Al Pacino and Talia Shire were born on April 25. Diane Keaton and Robert Duvall were born on January 5. James Caan and Sterling Hayden were born on March 26. Abe Vigoda, Saro Urzi, Al Lettieri were born on February 24. Dominic Chianese, who appeared in The Godfather: Part II, was also born on February 24.

-Simonetta Stefanelli, who plays Michael's Sicilian wife Apollonia, was only 16 at the time the movie was filmed.

-Some people thought James Caan was miscast because he did not have what some would consider to be Italian features

-During the scene when little Vito arrives at Ellis Island with other immigrants, he is marked with a letter x in a circle. This told Ellis Island staff that the person was believed to have a mental disorder

-Four of the considered actors for the role of Joey Zasa were Mickey Rourke, who did not look "Italian enough", John Turturro, Dennis Farina and Sylvester Stallone

-At first, Andy Garcia was suggested he looked too Cuban to play an Italian role
-The character Joey Zasa was based on two famous mob figures, Joey Gallo and Joe Columbo. Columbo led the Italian-American Civil Rights League, who was supposed to be a civil rights group fighting for the rights of Italian-Americans but was actually trying to stop FBI investigations into mob activity. This embarrassed the Mafia, whose number one rule was silence. Columbo kept a high profile and the money he made he didn't share with the mob. During a rally in Columbus Circle, Columbo was shot and killed by a black gangster, who was the hitman. The police reports state that the gangster was shot and killed immediately by "person or persons unknown". As for Gallo, he organized the hit on Columbo, who was famous for not discriminating against anyone and mixing things up by hiring blacks and Latinos into his crews. He was most likely of the opinion that "if you want to make money, why not? I don't care about the color of your skin or race".

This show might be considered raunchy by the more serious people of the world, but it is funny. Not once do you ever see Al Bundy cheat on his wife Peg. He might talk about her being an issue, but he loves her dearly
Summary
-Al Bundy works as a salesman in a women's shoe store. His wife, Peg, is lazy and won't cook or do housework. His son Bud thinks he's a ladies' man when he really isn't. His daughter Kelly is dimwitted and is frequent in relationships with men

Cast
-Ed O'Neill: Al Bundy
-Katey Sagal: Peg Bundy
-Amanda Bearse: Marcy D'Arcy
-David Faustino: bun Bundy
-Christina Applegate: Kelly Bundy
-Ted McGinley: Jefferson D'Arcy
-David Garrison: Steve Rhodes

Did You Know?
-On the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Ed O'Neill's star is in front of a shoe store

-When the show was cancelled, the last episode being May 6, 1997, Fox was trying to decide whether to renew or cancel. They cancelled it and did not tell the cast. Christina Applegate learned of the show's cancellation through two of her friends while Ed O'Neill was on vacation and a couple staying nearby let him know about it through an article they had read in the newspaper. He bought them a meal in appreciation

-Ed O'Neill instantly got the role of Al Bundy because all he was required to do was walk through the front door into the Bundy home. But the way he did it was he walked through with slumped shoulders and a deep breath as if he had a hard day at work and producers knew he instantly understood the role

-When the show got more popular, fans would make requests for Ed O'Neill to make birthday and holiday telephone calls while in character as Al Bundy. They would be collect calls, to be in line with Al's cheapskate character

-This show ran into some controversy. A woman named Terry Rakolta, who is all for family values and a Michigan housewife, found the show offensive. She wrote to Fox, urging them to cancel the show. A few channels stopped showing commercials advertising the show, but it had the opposite effect. The story spread like wildfire and ratings for the show jumped. Each year the show was renewed, flowers were sent to Rakolta. The issue was even spoofed on an episode called "No Pot to Pease In", where the Bundy family learns a show is being made based on their lives and gets cancelled because "a housewife in Michigan didn't like it".

-It was Katey Sagal's idea for her character to dress in 1960s-style clothing. She wanted to spoof the 1960s housewife model. When she auditioned, she brought her own red wig. When she landed the role, producers added this image into the show and she brought her own capri-type leggings, a large belt, slip on heels.
-In a 2013 interview, Ed O'Neill admitted that he and Amanda Bearse, who placed Marcy, did not get along. Despite the fact that they generally respected and liked each other, problems started occurring after the third season. O'Neill said that Bearse had started getting "more masculine" and "snarky" and arguments over trivial matters would come up. Despite the fact that O'Neill was fully supportive of Bearse coming out as a lesbian in 1993, she did not invite O'Neill and David Faustino to her wedding. She was worried they would laugh at the sight of "two women in tuxedos". O'Neill even admitted he would

-The name Marcy D'Arcy is a spinoff of the name Marcy Carsey, who was the executive producer of The Cosby Show

-007 actor Roger Moore admitted this show was a guilty pleasure of his because he was friends with director Boris Sagal, Katey Sagal's father

-According to interviews of David Faustino and Ed O'Neill, they brought parts of their real life into the show. Faustino wanted to be a rapper, thus the name Grandmaster B and in college O'Neill really did play college football

-During the show, Katey Sagal was pregnant three times. The first time was in season six, around mid 1991. Her pregnancy was written into the role to make it easier for her but then written out when she miscarried. The second time was 1994 and the third time was between 1995-1996 and those pregnancies were hidden from the audience

-David Garrison, who played Steve, left the show because he missed performing in live theatre. A story was worked out that said Steve and Marcy grew apart, in her opinion because he loved his Mercedes Benz more than her
-The car Al uses is a 1972 Plymouth Duster
-The Bundy family and Rhodes family were named after professional wrestlers King Kong Bundy and Dusty Rhodes.

-In the season four, episode 13 episode "Who'll Stop the Rain?", when Al falls off the roof, was voted the funniest moment in the show's history

-Between the ninth and tenth seasons, in 1995, Christina Applegate wore a blonde wig because she had dyed her hair red for a role in the 1997 film Nowhere

-Christina Applegate's birthday, November 25, 1971, also happens to the birthday for her character Kelly Bundy

-During the opening credits, the large fountain shown is the Buckingham Fountain in downtown Chicago
-Ed O'Neill said he based his character Al on one of his uncles because they both share so many traits in their personality
-Actress Meghan Markle spent some time on the set of this show during her childhood because her father was Thomas W. Markle, a director of photography who worked behind the scenes there

-At first, Katey Sagal, Christina Applegate and Ed O'Neill were doubtful about how successful the show would be. When they read the scripts, they found it funny and thought it would be fun to do

-A lot of people would often compare Al Bundy to The Simpsons character Homer Simpson

-On one episode of Sons of Anarchy, when Katey Sagal (Gemma Teller) is on the run from the law, Tig Trager (Kim Coates) suggests she dye her hair red. She says she would rather shave her head bald. This is a reference to her playing Peg Bundy

Did You Know?
-The bruise Renee Coleman received when sliding into base lasted for over a year

-All the injuries and bruises the actresses received during the movie were real

-Any of the actresses auditioning for the movie had to prove they could play baseball. All the actresses, apart from Geena Davis, did their own baseball plays

-During the credit roll, the women seen playing on the field, are actual original All American Women's Professional Baseball Team players

-Growing up, Lori Petty was the only girl on an all-boys' baseball team

-During the final scene, the woman who referred to Dottie Hinson as "the best player in the league" was Dolores "Pickles" Dries, a pitcher for the Rockford Peaches in 1952, 1953 and 1954

-When the movie was filmed, it was shown as unpopular and not worth watching and using cheap gimmicks to sell tickets. In reality, the all-female league proved to be more than successful, playing in Midwest towns with no access to live baseball games. This would lead to a ten team, two-division league. Unfortunately, televised baseball in the early 1950s was the end of the line for the league

-When they were practicing, the women were told they needed to attend charm school. In reality, the AAGBPL had to attend the Helena Rubenstein Beauty Salon to have make overs. They also attended Helena Rubenstein's Evening Charm School to learn proper etiquette, hygiene and learn about how enforce the league dress code

Racine Belles
Rockford Peaches
-While filming, Lori Petty threw more pitches than most MLB pitchers do in an entire season
-During the Rockford-Racine game, it was well over 100 degrees outside

-When the movie was filming in Evansville, Indiana, for the Racine and World Series games, Madonna was so rude to citizens, hotel/restaurant staff in addition to other locals, her reputation became nasty. To this day, her reputation is still severely tarnished and she even spoke incredibly poorly of the city during interviews
-The red-orange hotel the team stays in is located in Henderson, Kentucky

-Penny Marshall, who directed the movie, was inspired to create this movie after seeing a documentary on PBS about the AAGBPL and her love of baseball
-The character Walter Harvey is based on Phillip Wrigley, the owner of the Chicago Cubs and real life founder of the AAGBPL. The Harvey chocolate bars are supposed to mirror the chewing gum released by Wrigley

-One of the considerations for the role of Doris Murphy was actress Anjelica Huston

-Michael J. Fox and Bryan Cranston were considered for the role of Jimmy Dugan

-Robert De Niro was considered for the role of Bob Hinson

-At the start of the movie, two cars named Mia and Tia flash their headlights at Lightning. This is a nod to adult racing fans, who know that the phrase "flashing their headlights" refers to female fans lifting their tops and showing their breasts

-Animators wanted Lightning McQueen to be cocky and arrogant. For reference, they looked to people like Kid Rock, Joe Namath and Muhammad Ali

Summary
-A cowboy doll named Woody feels shoved aside when his owner Andy gets a new state-of-the-art space toy for his birthday

Cast
-Tom Hanks: Woody
-Tim Allen: Buzz Lightyear
-Don Rickles: Mr. Potato Head
-Jim Varney: Slinky Dog
-Wallace Shawn: Rex
-John Ratzenberger: Hamm
-Annie Potts: Bo Peep
-John Morris: Andy
-Erik Von Detten: Sid
-Laurie Metcalf: Mrs. Davis
-R. Lee Ermey: Sergeant
-Sarah Freeman: Hannah
-Jack Angel: Sharky

Did You Know?
-The neighbor kid, Sid Phillips, was said to have been inspired by a Pixar employee with the same name who disassembled toys to create bizarre toys and creations

-Tom Hanks, who voices Woody the Cowboy, did his dialogue recording during his breaks while filming Sleepless in Seattle and A League of Their Own. He didn't record his dialogue during Philadelphia or Forrest Gump because he felt that he shouldn't do comedy between serious roles.

-The thing that attracted Tom Hanks to the role of Woody was that when he was a child, he often wondered if his toys were alive and moved around when nobody was there.

-The carpet in Sid's house has the same hexagonal design as the carpet from the Overlook Hotel in The Shining

-The toolbox on top of the milk crate trapping Woody says "Binford" on it. This is a reference to the show Home Improvement. Binford Tools are the tools he used on the show

-At the Dinoco gas station, the Pizza Planet delivery boy asks for directions to West Cutting Boulevard. In real life, West Cutting Boulevard is the street that Pixar Animation Studios is located in Richmond, California

-When Sarge and his team are spying on the kids at Andy's birthday party, the kids who show up are the same character model of Andy except for different skin tones and different haircuts, clothes and accessories

-Originally, Pizza Planet was to be called Pizza Putt, a combination pizza parlor/mini-golf course

-The name of the kid, "Andy", was inspired by Andries "Andy" Van Dam, a Brown University professor of computer science and animation. He taught most of the makers of this movie

-Filmmakers have stated that the car chase scene towards the end of the movie was partially inspired by the toy train chase scene from English Claymation cartoon Wallace & Gromit, the episode "The Wrong Trousers". They used that as inspiration and took it a step further with using a remote control car being chased by a dog

-When the toy shark comes out of the toy box, wearing Woody's hat, saying "Look, I'm Woody! Howdy! Howdy! Howdy!", this is a reference to comic strip legend Gary Larson, known best for his hilarious Far Side Gallery of comics. The comic strip in reference shows a vulture wearing cowboy clothing and saying "Hey, everyone. Look at me, I'm a cowboy! Howdy! Howdy! Howdy!"
-Buzz Lightyear's name is inspired by Buzz Aldrin, the second man to land on the moon and light year, the amount of distance a beam of light travels in one year

-The idea of Andy favoring Buzz over Woody represents the cultural phenomenon of the 1950s. Kids would love playing with Western and cowboy toys. When the Russian satellite Sputnik went up, the space race between the US and the Soviet Union began, essentially leaving kids to favor space-related toys and want to be astronauts instead. This is addressed, literally, in Toy Story 2, by the character The Prospector

-Sid's dog Scud is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier
-R. Lee Ermey, who voiced Sarge, based his character off his character Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from the film Full Metal Jacket. In real life, R. Lee Ermey was a Gunnery Sergeant in the US Marine Corps. This is why most of the films he's in have him playing a military-type role.

-Sid's name was inspired by punk rocker and Sex Pistols member Sid Vicious
-Sid's dog is named Scud. This is a reference to the biological weapons carried by ballistic missiles used by Saddam Hussein during an attack on the US during the 1991 Persian Gulf War

-Unlike the dog in the film, Staffordshire Bull Terriers are very docile and gentle. They're non-threatening and very good family dogs

-The car that Buzz and Hamm drive is the Pizza Planet truck. It's a Gyoza, which is a pun on Toyota. In real life, a gyoza is a type of Asian dumpling

-Mary Kay Bergman, who provided the yodels for Jessie, committed suicide two days before the film's release

-When the toys are leaving Al's apartment building, to get the door to stay open, Mr. Potato Head throws his hat in just a way to keep it open. This is a nod to the James Bond film Goldfinger, where Oddjob would throw his hat in that same technique

-When Utility Belt Buzz "arrests" normal Buzz, he is told that he is in direct violation of Code 6404.5, stating all space rangers are to remain in hyper-sleep until awakened by authorized personnel. In real life, Code 6404.5 is a California state law banning smoking in public places

Initially, he tried country Canadian accents, but still felt it didn't work. Then he came up with the genius idea to do the voice over work in a Scottish accent like his mother used when reading bedtime stories to him as a child. Unfortunately, it cost over $4 million to do twenty sessions to complete this re-voiceover

-Douglas Rogers, the art director for the film, wanted Shrek's swamp to look like a southern plantation. He visited a magnolia plantation in Charleston, South Carolina and was chased by an alligator while there

-The song "I'm a Believer", which was covered by Smash Mouth for this movie, was specifically chosen because of the line "I thought love was only true in fairy tales"

-When recording her fight scenes with Robin Hood and his Merry Men, Cameron Diaz had become very physical. She had studied kung fu for her role in Charlie's Angels and at times started speaking Cantonese.

-Experts in medieval armor were brought in to help make the armor in the movie more realistic

Did You Know?
-When Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots are walking through the Fairy Godmother's factory, the employees are putting bottles on the conveyor belt. One of the bottles reads "Viagra"

-It was a pure coincidence when there was a poster of a Sir Justin Timberlake in the movie. No one had any idea that Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake were actually dating in real life. Justin would have a role playing Arthur in Shrek the Third

-Jennifer Saunders, who voiced the Fairy Godmother, did all her own singing for the movie
-In the police chase scene, there are references to a "white Bronco". This refers to the famous slow-motion highway chase which involved police officers chasing O.J. Simpson in a white Ford Bronco. The camera work and appearance also mimic the show Cops.

-The song "Changes", originally by David Bowie, was re-recorded by an artist named Butterfly Boucher for the movie. David Bowie was so impressed with this version of the song that he provided backing vocals on this version

-When Donkey, Shrek and Fiona left for Far Far Away, Donkey starts singing "Rawhide". Eddie Murphy ad libbed this and producers kept it in the movie

-To make sure his interpretation of Puss in Boots was accurate, Antonio Banderas, who owns several cats, studied them, studied their movements

-John Cleese and Julie Andrews recorded their lines together to get the right mood for their characters. This is considered unusual for an animated movie

-When the giant Gingerbread Man (Mongo) is hit with the flaming catapult ball, the roar it lets off is the same roar used by the original Japanese Godzilla

-William Steig, who wrote the book the movie is based on, died during the production of this movie

-When Shrek turns in to a human after drinking the potion, the human form resembles Mike Myers
-When the Fairy Godmother gives the King a potion to give to Fiona, the symbol on it is IX, which is the Roman numeral for 9. This makes it Love Potion No. 9, which is a popular song

-When Shrek and Donkey find the factory where the Fairy Godmother works, Donkey says "It's the old Keeble Place", referring to the Keebler Elves

-When Puss in Boots first comes after Shrek, he carves a P in to the tree. This is a reference to the movie The Mask of Zorro, where Antonio Banderas plays the title role.

-There are loads of references to the Lord of the Rings in this movie. One is the scene where Shrek gives Fiona a ring that comes from a fire and says, in the same type of Elvish font, "I love you" with the same type of cinematic angle. Another is The Poison Apple Tavern is similar to the inn from the movie, The Prancing Pony seen in The Fellowship of the Ring. The last one is in the first Shrek movie, the castle in which Fiona is held captive is in a mountain that resembles Mount Doom in Mordor

-There are references to Indiana Jones as well. The first one is when Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots are escaping the factory, Puss in Boots grabs his hat just in time for the door to close. This is a reference to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. In the movie, Indiana reaches for his fedora hat before a door in a trap in the temple closes. Another reference is when the potion barrel is knocked over, this also references Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. In that movie, Thugee cult leader Mola Ram has his assistants knock over a large barrel of water to chase Indy down a mine shaft.

-The pictures seen in the halls of the castle are of real kings and queens. In one picture is Queen Elizabeth I
-Fiona can be seen wearing an Irish Claddagh necklace when she is talking to her dad after Shrek and Donkey meet Puss in Boots. Typically, Irish Claddagh symbols can be worn as a necklace or ring and they symbolize friendship, love and loyalty.

-When Jennifer Saunders was doing this movie, she was also recording Absolutely Fabulous. She had to do her vocal recordings in England
-Actor Jonathan Pryce was considered for the role of King Harold

-Cloris Leachman was considered for the role of Queen Lillian

-In the school scene, the song "All Star" by Smash Mouth is being played. A real high school band was brought in for authenticity. The cheerleading squad routine was also based on footage of an actual local high school cheer squad running through routines

-When the princesses attack the castle, the song that starts playing is "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin. The band is very hesitant in using their songs for commercial purposes. There are two other films that use this song: School of Rock and Thor: Ragnarok. The song "Barracuda" by Heart is also used in this movie, but on the soundtrack album, Fergie covers the song

-When Artie is leaving school, he utters the line that he is "building his city on rock 'n' roll". This is a modified version of the line "we built this city on rock 'n' roll", which is the title to a 1985 song called "We Built This City" by Starship

-During the knighting scene, the stained glass window in the background shows an image of St. George slaying the last dragon in England. In this case, it shows a prince slaying a dragon to save a princess or an ogre doing the same thing

-Eddie Murphy: Donkey
-Antonio Banderas: Puss in Boots
-Julie Andrews: Queen Lillian

Did You Know?
-The only Shrek film not released in the 2000s

-Rumpelstiltskin was, according to Fiona's parents, recommended by King Midas. In Greek legend Midas made a wish for everything he touched to turn to gold. This had backfired in more ways than one. His daughter turned to gold and all food/drink he touched turn to gold, leading him to die of starvation

-The same actors and actresses from the other three Shrek films appeared in this one as well

-Originally the idea of Puss in Boots becoming fat and lazy was met with harsh resistance until it was proven there was comedic value to it, so it was left in

-Since this movie has the issue of marriage crises in it, the production team consulted various marriage counselors to represent how the characters should behave

-One of the witch cronies used by Rumpelstiltskin is named "Baba". This is a reference to the witch of Slavic/Russian folklore Baba Yaga
-In the trailer park where Rumpelstiltskin lives, there is a sign that reads "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here." This is said to be on the gates of Hell, according to Dante Allighieri's The DivineComedy, specifically from the first part, ironically titled Dante's Inferno
