Bruce Dickinson feared for his voice after fighting cancer

Current Iron Maiden front man Bruce Dickinson worried about the future of his voice after fighting cancer.
In 2014, the band released their 16th studio album, The Book of Souls. Unfortunately, touring for the Mayan-themed album was postponed because of Bruce's cancer diagnosis. He had to take ten months off for recovery and treatment

"I was pinching myself for the first shows back, because none of us knew how it was going to sound, my voice. Unquestionably there were some things that had changed and it was difficult. There were so many things that were uncertain. You just had to open your gob and see what came out – if a bag of spanners fell out you’d think, 'Oh s—.'" he told British metal magazine Kerrang!

When he first received his cancer diagnosis, Dickinson admits to going through a bout of depression before finally deciding to take the bull by the horns and face it head on. He says "I turned down things like feeding tubes. They wanted to put bloody pipes and holes in me. I went, 'Nah, I’m not going to do that. I will feed myself somehow.' I thought, 'Let’s just get stuck into things as quickly as possible, and if it doesn’t work I’ll have to make another plan. I was very lucky I didn’t lose a catastrophic amount of weight, as a lot of people do. You can feel sorry for yourself, and I went through a phase of that. But I thought, 'There’s no point in assuming I’m going to get a bad result here'".

While their singer was taking care of his cancer situation, Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harrist was becoming aware quickly and even admitted publicly the band can't go on forever. But they are taking careful steps to keep retirement at bay, especially the band's lively drummer, Nicko McBrain

Steve Harris had this to say. "It’s got to happen at some point, but I don’t really want to think about it. We’re not getting any younger. Lo and behold, after all these years Nicko’s given up drinking. He gave up about 18 months ago. He’s better for it – I think everyone’s thinking that they want to go on longer, and are doing whatever they think is necessary to do that." Even if Maiden ended tomorrow, he said he wouldn't want to be "pottering about the garden. If I’m able I’d still do some gigs with British Lion, and I would still like to record".

Bruce Dickinson: Maiden Voyage

This is the new autobiography from Bruce Dickinson. It goes into a very great detail about who he is and his life both in/out of Maiden. It also talks about early girlfriends, meeting his first wife and then second wife and how it was to become a father. He also talks about the health scare and risk of having a golf ball-sized lump of cancer on his tongue. This book is a sort of continuation of the previously released book with the irritatingly long title Bruce Dickinson: Flashing Metal with Maiden and Flying Solo.
This book is very interesting. It starts out telling how Bruce's grandparents came to meet. About how they had children and how one day they would meet. Bruce's mother, Sonia, was a talented ballet dancer who had won a scholarship to the Royal Ballet Academy. But she had to drop out because she had become pregnant with her son, who she would name Paul Bruce Dickinson. She was only 16 at the time while his father, Bruce Dickinson Sr, was 17 and in the Army. His parents were very young to have a child, a child that was never meant to be born, an accidental birth. Not only that, they were very financially poor, so they sent the new child to live with Bruce's grandparents while they went to look for work in Sheffield. Not only that, but later on, his parents would have another child, a girl they named Helen. To this day, Bruce feels incredibly estranged from his sister because he describes her birth as a planned birth because his parents wanted to have her while his birth was accidental.

He went to a variety of schools, like the somewhat posh Sharrow Vale, very rough Manor Top Primary, and later on Oundle, a British public school (private school in American English). It was there that he discovered music. Deep Purple had just released their LP, In Rock. The song that captured his mind was "Child in Time". Up until then, most of the schools Bruce had attended left him with the perpetual "new kid" label and left him subject to bullying, ranging from drying out clothes that had been drenched with water, picking out dried eggs from his bed and even getting late night beatings with pillows

As he got older, despite his here-and-there educational career, he applied himself to Queen Mary College in London, despite never being to the capital city at all. During this time, he was trying to get a career in music started. Originally, singing is not what he had in mind. He actually wanted to be a drummer, like Ian Paice of Deep Purple. But since he had no room for said drums, he settled on bongos. What inspired this was one time during high school, he was watching a bunch of classmates messing around with the Beatles song "Let It Be". Noticing that the singer couldn't seem to hit the high notes, he stepped in to bolster this singer's voice and immediately noticed that he could in fact hit those high notes and more. That inspired him to go out and get a microphone-he had found his calling. During college, he had moved through various bands, all seemingly starting with the same letter, S-Shots, Styx (not the American version of the band; he was unaware that there was an American band of the same name), Speed (not from the drug, but the breakneck speed of the music) and finally Samson, named not after the biblical character whose hair is shorn, but after founding member, guitarist Paul Samson.

Later on, Bruce would have a solo band with an S-starting name again-Skunkworks, although the label recording this album didn't want the band called Skunkworks. They insisted the album be called Skunkworks with Bruce's name prominent on it, which aggravated Bruce because he wanted the whole band to get credit, not just him. He knows how to work as a team.
When Bruce joined Samson, he had to learn all the material from their Survivors album. Not everyone was enthused by the new addition of the singer. Some people preferred the hard bluesy rock Paul Samson provided with his singing and guitar playing, rather than the prog rock, Deep Purple-type direction Bruce was taking the band in with his voice. But handling both was proving too difficult. So it was decided to find a singer.

Even then, Bruce was developing his stage craft. He would call people out from the audience and joke with them. As time went on, the time with Samson became less about the music and more about the pyro. It seemed Paul Samson was trying to beat the newer, younger bands at their own game when the reality was he simply couldn't. One day, Bruce was offered the role of front man for Iron Maiden since that band's front man, Paul Di'Anno, had been unceremoniously let go due to his issues with various recreational substances and the very constant loss of his voice, which irritated Steve Harris to no end. Some nights, Steve Harris had to handle lead vocals, which I didn't even know he could do. I  didn't know he could sing. Bruce consulted friend and PR consultant Jennie Halsall, known as the Heavy Metal Queen of PR. When told about this upcoming offer, she said something to this effect. "I do what is right, not necessarily what is right for me. Offers like this don't come around a lot. You can take this new offer, but the Samson boys are going to hate you because their deal is going to fall through". At the time, Samson was being courted by new labels, since they had just gotten off their label, Ramkup. When Bruce broke the news, he did it as amicably as possible.

Bruce auditioned for Maiden, unofficially, at a music studio in London, shortly after the 1981 departure of then front man Paul Di'Anno. When the Maiden boys heard Bruce sing, it was like a sign from the heavens. His high wailing vocals meant the band could go in directions previously unheard of. The 1980s proved to be very successful for Bruce and Maiden; they managed to break America, break records, sell records. Unfortunately, they became part of the problem of the so-called "moral majority", meaning they were considered to be bad influences on the youth of America, turning them on to what was called "devil's music" and being accused of being Satanists or devil worshippers. This is complete crap! The last band on the planet to be devil worshippers is Iron Maiden. Their drummer, Nicko McBrain, is a 100% devout Christian and most likely so are all three guitar players-Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers, since they all wear crosses around their necks.

1986. Jeez, you think Dave Murray's jeans could be any tighter? lol!

The 1990s, however, proved to be more difficult. It was the time of experimentation, where members of bands went out and did something completely different than what they normally did, something completely out of left field. Bruce, it seemed, wanted to pick from the fruit of a tree different than Maiden. In the 1990s, he had upped his game in fencing, a sport he had done while at Oundle, but had lost interest in over the years. He had some problems with customs because they didn't know what fencing equipment looked like and he had to learn how to say "fencing" in over ten languages. Most likely, the customs people thought it was weird that a heavy metal singer would have the whole fencing kit travelling with him. He also began taking flying lessons.

He also had begun working on a solo album, that was to be called Tattooed Millionaire. This was said to be one of his most successful solo albums, not only because the songs were good, but for the David Bowie fans out there, he did a heavy metal overhaul of the David Bowie classic "All the Young Dudes". He had started doing this right after the Seventh Son of a Seventh Son tour. He describes that album as being long and really expensive to record. Unfortunately by the time the Somewhere in Time album was recorded, Bruce was contributing just as many songs as Steve Harris and the others, but most if not all of Bruce's songs were rejected. Most of the guys laughed hysterically at some of his suggestions because some of them had a Spanish folk guitar-type sound to them. Which explains why Bruce went out and did a solo album of music he wants because he felt that no one was listening to his suggestions when he was busting his butt, writing just as many songs as Steve Harris, but it was Steve's songs and songs written by the other guys that were getting used. Not only that, but with Steve being a now father, he had started taking his own tour bus to gigs because he now had kids and this allowed him and his young family a type of freedom to go and stay wherever their hearts desired and go and see the sights, rather than go from gig to hotel to gig to hotel. Steve wanted to start taking his own tour bus because he didn't want to keep the others in the band up with crying babies all night.

When it came time to record the band's first new album of the decade, which was to be titled No Prayer for the Dying, they did the recording in a barn at Steve Harris' house. When Bruce listened to some of the songs for the album, he felt the band had taken a step back. He had recently began listening to a band called Dream Theatre and when he talked to Nicko, he said something to the effect of "Listen to No Prayer for the Dying and listen to these demos of a band called Dream Theatre. This band completely blows Maiden's sound away and it shouldn't." It turned out that the first one to leave Maiden wouldn't be Bruce, but Adrian. He had left to pursue a solo career under the moniker ASAP (Adrian Smith Album Project). The next album, Fear of the Dark, is said to be one of Maiden's darker albums, in terms of lyrical content because bass player Steve Harris was in the process of splitting with his high school sweetheart Lorraine, who was also the mother of their four kids-George, Kerry, Faye, Lauren and it was said to be a nasty divorce

After Fear of the Dark, Bruce went on to form a solo career. He talks about the songs on each one and not only that, the producers, musicians and anyone else who helped on the albums talked as well. He talks about celebrating the marriage to now wife Paddy Bowden and celebrating the birth of his two sons, Austin Matthew Bowden Dickinson in 1990 and Griffin Michael Bowden Dickinson in 1992. When Bruce left, tabloid journalists were trying to dig up every amount of dirt they could on the singer's departure. Unfortunately, the one person they chose to annoy was drummer Nicko McBrain, who was tired and slightly intoxicated at 2am after a gig in Bremen, Germany. He was already tired of being asked repeatedly about the singer's departure from the band. He said something to the effect of "When he left, that was almost saying "F--- you" He doesn't want to be with a bunch of has-beens. He went his way, we're going our way. We'll get a new singer. F--- him!" He would go on to have a very successful solo career, making albums such as Balls to Picasso, Accident of Birth, The Chemical Wedding, Tyranny of Souls, Skunkworks. It was during the making of Balls to Picasso that Paddy and Bruce welcomed their third child, Kia Michele. When Bruce left the band, Steve was starting to think the end had come. He was at a very low point in his life, after going through a divorce from his high school sweetheart, Lorraine. Just when he thought he couldn't go on any further, it was his trusted second in command, Dave Murray, who finally spoke up. He said something to the effect of why should we have to quit just because Bruce did. We'll get someone else. And get someone else they did. They recruited former Wolfsbane front man Blaze Bayley.

During the mid to late 1990s, Bruce started working on what would be the album Accident of Birth. He said that he wanted to challenge himself, see how far he could push himself musically, on his last album, Skunkworks. The label that was to release the album said they insisted on having the name "Bruce Dickinson" on it, which aggravated Bruce to no end, as he saw the making of the album as a team effort. He wanted the whole band to be credited for it instead of having the album name "Bruce Dickinson Skunkworks". He went painfully out of his way not to make it seem like he called all the shots. He made sure that people working with him got credit and got songs on there as well. Most if not all the critics labelled the album Skunkworks as a failure. But Bruce said he enjoyed making it. But he wanted to make a return to all-out heavy metal, what he known best for. And that return would be called Accident of Birth. This album is definitely the heavier of his solo albums in terms of heavy sounds, riffs, just an overall metal feel. It almost has an industrial metal sound to it.

Meanwhile, in the land of Maiden, the band were bedding new singer Blaze Bayley into proceedings on the new album, which was to be called The X Factor. It's said to be the darkest album Maiden has ever made, definitely not for the younger spectrum of Maiden fans. Blaze mentioned that he said Steve Harris was nearly in tears at some of the offensive things Bruce had said. It seemed almost as if Bruce was dismissive of the past, dismissive of the legendary place he had built in Maiden, almost as if being the singer in Maiden was nothing to be proud of, just like anyone could do it. Blaze also mentions that it was difficult to record and that it took a full year to make, from beginning to end. The songs on that album are very dark in tone and subject. He said that the songs had a strong progressive rock feel to them, stemming from Steve's love of Genesis and prog rock. Also, the content on the album is very dark, very intense, very moody. It's almost very adult-oriented. Blaze would go on to make just two albums with Maiden: 1995's The X Factor and 1998's Virtual XI. Unfortunately, towards the end of the 1990s, plans were being made to reunite with Bruce. After a band meeting, it was decided that Bruce was coming back. Blaze did the kindly, gentlemanly way of exiting the band saying he would not trash the band or insult them the way Bruce did. He made for a very classy exit from the band. Nowadays, Blaze has his own band and does his own music, but will cover Maiden songs from time to time, the ones they didn't necessarily cover a lot.

As 1999 morphed into 2000, Bruce was invited back to the band and had one surprise-he was bringing Adrian Smith back. Both had gone and done their solo work, almost purging themselves of any demons lurking within. They seemed to gotten off all unnecessary steam and came back into the band with a renewed energy. The band was now ready to tackle an album of the new generation. Some people wondered how the three guitar lineup would work, even Janick Gers questioned that. When news of Adrian's return was brought up, he said that if he needed to stand down, he would. Steve said that Janick was going nowhere. He was an essential part of the Maiden machine. The new album was to be titled Brave New World, after the Aldous Huxley book. And it's ironic how some people think that they are just a bunch of ignorant musicians. It's hard to be ignorant when writing music, especially music that becomes popular very quickly and especially a band that takes their song and album titles from very old books, movies and even historical happenings. Pretty good for a bunch of East End London boys. On this new album, Bruce had writing credits on at least two songs, "Out of the Silent Planet" and "The Thin Line Between Love and Hate".

In 2003, the band once again, wrote another album, Dance of Death. It was said to be good, except for a song or two here and there. The song said to be the weaker point on the album is "Gates of Tomorrow". Whoever said this song wasn't great is smoking something, lol. I love this song. It's great. Even drummer Nicko McBrain gets a writing credit on this song, "Journeyman", which is about cloning.

However, big history was going to be made in 2005. Iron Maiden were one of the many bands playing at the 2005 Ozzfest in San Bernadino, California. Apparently Bruce had made some rather disparaging remarks about reality TV onstage, saying that people who do reality TV "need to get off their arses and stop being so voyeuristic. Reality TV is crap". Sharon thought he was talking about her and her family, she said that Bruce was cold to Ozzy, who had kindly wished him luck before the show while he just dismissed it off. And Bruce also suspects that it was a cold, calculated attack on the band. The band was pelted with eggs, lighters, bottle tops during their set. The power to their equipment was cut, someone kept going over the PA system, shouting "Ozzy, Ozzy", a man draped in a US flag ran around the stage during their set. And Sharon even tried to turn Bruce's waving of the Union Jack into a political issue. She said something to the effect of "There you are waving the Union Flag on American soil when both American and English boys are fighting alongside one another overseas. Have a little more consideration and respect".

Of course, the fight extended to management as well. She sent a letter to Maiden manager Rod Smallwood, detailing all the things she thought about Bruce. She thought of him as an arrogant prick, who most likely thought that because he went to public school he was automatically better than everyone else. She also mentioned that it was Bruce and Bruce alone she had the issue with, not the rest of the band, whom she described as "kind, professional and courteous". Rod Smallwood issued a statement saying something to the effect of "I've been in the rock business for over thirty years and I've never seen something so disgusting and unprofessional as this. This was a calculated attack against the bands. And Ozzfest security did nothing to stop it. Almost as if they were supporting it. The fact that it almost seemed as if she were urging the fans to throw things is irresponsible. Them throwing things is vile, dangerous and cowardly". The last thing you want to do, of course, is make Rod Smallwood angry. He is definitely one to tangle with, especially considering he's a pretty big guy. Of course, Sharon sent another letter, signed "The Real Iron Maiden". Funny name, huh? Most who study history (including me) know that the REAL IRON MAIDEN is Margaret Thatcher, who rightly earned and deserves that name for her no nonsense approach to politics and being one of the first people to go behind what was then known as the Iron Curtain. Even bassist Steve Harris had to issue a statement saying that not only but the rest of the band were embarrassed by their singer's actions.

As the 2000s went on, the band would make even more albums, each one getting better. In 2008, they recorded and released A Matter of Life and Death. This one, like all their albums, would have a theme-this one being war. The theme is evident on the front as it shows a tank with battle-weary skeletal soldiers and emblazoned on the front of the tank is Eddie with crossed M-16s below him and donning a military helmet. It was said that this one would one of the more complex albums because of the lyrical content dealing with war, destruction and other adult-type topics. Later that same year, they embarked on their Somewhere Back in Time tour, which was the basis of the documentary Iron Maiden: Flight 666. It showed the band flying around the world on their customized Boeing 747, which was customized to carry twenty tons of stage gear and backline equipment in addition to the various instruments Maiden uses, like all the guitars, the bass guitars and the drums. The documentary interviews the band members, various management along with people who interviewed the band in other countries and also talks to fans, the ones responsible for keeping the band inspired and to keep going along with showing Bruce piloting the plane. In addition, it shows the various band members going sightseeing, doing things to relax, such as Dave Murray and Nicko McBrain taking in a round of golf and Nicko managing to nearly break his hand by a golf ball hit and Rod laughing and saying "I told you golf was a bloody dangerous sport" or the band going to an underground cave in Mexico to perform a spiritual ritual honoring the dead.

In 2010, they recorded and released The Final Frontier. Most would think this is their last album, judging from the name. In actuality, the name stems from something Star Trek-related, since Bruce is a giant sci-fi fan. After that, the band would take some time off. This gave Bruce time to engage in one of his other major interests besides fencing-aviation. He would go to business conferences talking about how he thought that aviation businesses can improve themselves and help others. He would also donate his time and money to charities, which he still does today. One of those noted charities is the Sunflower Jam, a foundation founded by Jacky Paice, wife of Deep Purple drummer Ian Paice, which supports cancer victims. The foundation put on a concert and Bruce played The Who's "Behind Blue Eyes". It was also said that there would be a special type of ale called Trooper Ale that would be released with special artwork on the bottle. Plans were already being made for another album, which would be released in 2015. It was to be titled The Book of Souls and the theme on this one would be a strong Mayan theme, even extending to the stages, to the point where the stages looked like Mayan ruins, complete with stone pillars with the faces of the band carved into it and the eyes glowing orange, as if possessed by some demon.

Bruce Dickinson on documentary Flying Heavy Metal
But before plans could be made for the album, Bruce had gone to a yearly doctor's checkup and they discovered he had a golf ball-sized lump on the back of his tongue. After taking a biopsy, it turned out he had a very rare cancer of the head and neck. He would go through aggressive radiotherapy and chemotherapy while working on the album. On this album, he has a lot more writing credits, including the eighteen minute album closer "The Empire of the Clouds", which is most likely about, you guessed it, something related to aviation, a matter close to Bruce's heart. The first ten minutes are a piano interlude completed on a Steinway piano, which Bruce is playing. So it's obvious that Bruce is a very talented piano player. On the album, most of the songs are written by either Steve Harris, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers or Bruce Dickinson. The only writing credit penned to Dave Murray is "The Red and the Black". The band would also upgrade their jet. They would go from using a Boeing 757 that they customized and used for the Somewhere Back in Time and Final Frontier tours to using a Boeing 747-400, a gigantic beast of an airplane that allows them to carry more backline equipment and store more crew and staff.

You know how some people think that as people grow older, their voices might change either for the better or worse? Here are 10 rock/metal musicians whose voices has yet to change.

Bruce Dickinson
-Iron Maiden
Ronnie James Dio
-Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Dio
Rob Halford
-Judas Priest
Glenn Hughes
-Trapeze, Black Sabbath, California Breed, Black Country Communion
Geddy Lee
-Rush
Robert Plant
-Led Zeppelin, The Band of Joy
Bobby Blitz
-Overkill (I'm only adding him because he's on the list. I hate Overkill. I think they're hypocrites. They get on Avenged Sevenfold about getting their own logo because they have a winged skull like Overkill. BUT.....EXCUSE ME!!! Who is the band that writes their name like Iron Maiden??????? Any guesses? Hint, hint!)

Notice any similarities between this logo and that of Iron Maiden? I do!!

I'll admit that the logo is similar, but it's not the same. Overkill, get over yourselves!

Klaus Meine
-The Scorpions
Dee Snider
-Twisted Sister
King Diamond
-Mercyful Fate (I only added him because he's on the list. I do not know much about him other than that he's heavy metal. I don't know what kind of metal. I just hope it isn't that scary black metal stuff. That stuff truly scares me!)

Lauren Harris/The Raven Age

Ironically, they both have something in common-both have the same dad, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden fame, and both are musicians. Lauren is hard rock while The Raven Age is straight up metal. And obviously George Harris has a preference for tattoos like his dad because in the picture of The Raven Age, George is the one to the immediate right of the guy in front; his whole left arm is almost completely covered in a sleeve, but it is hidden. I discovered these two because I had heard about through Facebook. I like the Steve Harris Fan Club page on Facebook and whoever does the posting usually mentions these guys if they are on tour or are on tour with Steve's side band, British Lion. Or they will get photographed with their father, bass player Steve Harris.

Am I the only one who thinks that Blaze Bayley of Iron Maiden looks slightly similar to Peter Steele of Type O Negative? Just curious. At least when they were younger. Seeing Blaze Bayley now, wow!! What a difference time has made, and definitely not for the better, rofl! That picture of Blaze then is definitely different now. He's with a lot less hair and little more weight and I don't mean muscle, rofl!!

Ronnie Wood has a cancer scare

$

If you don't know the name Ronnie Wood, no matter. He's a guitar player, formerly of The Faces but now The Rolling Stones. He's recently had a major cancer scare.
Back in May, it was discovered that a cancerous lesion was found on the lung of former Faces but current Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood. He had the piece of his lung with the cancer in it removed for safety. He was lucky that the cancer was detected early and that no chemotherapy treatments were required. He still worried that if it wasn't discovered, he might not survive.

"There was a week when everything hung in the balance and it could have been curtains – time to say goodbye,” he told Event. “You never know what is going to happen"

It was discovered during a mandatory physical in preparation for next month's European tour. He says what followed that discovery "a week of tests. They needed to know if it had set up encampments and spread to my lymph nodes. If that had happened it would have been all over for me. … I was prepared for bad news but I also had faith it would be OK. Apart from the doctors, we didn’t tell anyone because we didn’t want to put anyone else though the hell we were going through. But I made up my mind that if it had spread I wasn’t going to go through chemo, I wasn’t going to use that bayonet in my body"

He said that one particular reason for not wanting to go through chemo was "I wasn’t going to lose my hair. This hair wasn’t going anywhere."

He says that even he is not shocked that it was discovered. The last time he had a chest X-ray was in 2002 in rehab and years of smoking cigarettes, which he had quit a year before the birth of his twin daughters.

"I had this thought at the back of my mind after I gave up smoking a year ago. How can I have got through 50 years of chain-smoking – and all the rest of my bad habits – without something going on in there?" He credits his wife, Sally Humphries, for helping him through

Later on, he said "Did I think I’d ever make it to see this? Hell no! Someone up there must like me. And luckily someone down here likes me too."

Bruce Dickinson is working on another memoir-this one written in his hand

I already pre-ordered this and am eagerly awaiting to read it. I bet with him writing it instead of an author, there will be no errors of spelling or grammar and no reason to doubt the truth written before you.

Considering this new book of his will be written completely in his hand, there is zero chance that this one will have spelling or grammatical errors, as prior books have had. Examples include, Bruce's name being spelled "Burce" or his sister Helen's name being spelled "Helena" or his school name being spelled "Oundale" instead of "Oundle".
This new memoir, titled What Does This Button Do?, is due out Oct. 19 all over the world and Oct. 31 in the US. This book, written completely in his hand, filling seven notebooks, will look back on his life from day 1 all the way through his years trying to become a famous musician in bands like Shots, Styx (different than the band known for "Renegade), Speed, Samson, Iron Maiden, to his very scary cancer situation until current day.

For the press release, they described it as "A true polymath, Bruce is, or has been, an airline pilot and captain, an aviation entrepreneur, a beer brewer, motivational speaker, film scriptwriter, twice-published novelist, radio presenter, TV actor and a world-class fencer. Bruce shares, for the first time, the most fascinating recollections, including his 30 years with Maiden, the early days, his childhood within the eccentric British school system, going solo and realizing his dream of flying jumbo jets."

This book will highlight some parts of his life that he had kept very well guarded, such as his childhood, his years at boarding school, his role as a father to three kids, one of whom fronts a hard rock band called As Lions and it will also go into detail about his fight with tongue cancer and how it delayed the release of Iron Maiden's 2015 The Book of Souls album. The band had actually just finished an exhausting world tour in support of the album. The book is available for pre-order now, and depending on what part of the world you live in, you might get it sooner than others.

Rob Halford on LGBT rights

"I always thought things would be better". This is what Rob Halford, front man for legendary British speed metal band Judas Priest had to say about the current state of affairs in the LGBT communities.
He always thought things would improve over time, like the old adage "Time heals all wounds". Apparently some wounds still refuse to heal. He thought things about gay rights would improve, but sadly no. He said he is happy with the warmth and kindness he has received from the hard rock community after coming out of the closet in 1998. He was actually worried at first about coming out as gay, thinking he would suffer from some sort of fallout effect

"I just get so frustrated and angry that here we are in 2017. Because of that society I grew up in, and to a still great extent today, we have this tremendous push back in equality. I always kind of felt, as I was going through my teen years, my twenties and my thirties, things would be better – but they’re not. There’s still a long way to go in America and in my home country. And in some parts of the world, people like me get thrown off buildings. People like me get hung, just because of who we are." He told Blabbermouth.

Rob compared struggles of LGBT people to the types of struggles faced by "people of color" and "people having tremendous difficulties with accepting religions". He added "It’s a crazy world. You’d think that by now we’d have just figured things out – live and let live, love each other and just accept each other for who we are. Life is short."

He recalled the moment he came out as gay during an MTV interview. "The thing about gay people is that, until we come out of the closet, we’re always protecting other people – ‘I can’t do this, because it’s gonna hurt so-and-so.’ We’re trying to live the lives of other people, and that’s the worst thing you can do. You’ve gotta learn to love yourself, then you can go out in the world and try and figure everything else out. So I said that thing, and I went back to the hotel and I thought, ‘What have I done? There’s going to be a fallout."

After coming out, he experienced not a fallout, but an outpouring of respect and kindness. His bandmates in Judas Priest had no issue with him being gay. Even bassist Ian Hill was quoted as saying "we always knew he was gay but we treated him like a normal human being because that's the way gay people should be treated."

He mentioned "I’d never seen such an outpouring of love in all my life from everybody in the metal community. Rob, we don’t care. We want you to be who you are.’ That was a tremendously uplifting moment for me. This just goes to show you that we in the metal community – probably because of the push back we felt because of the music we love – we are the most tolerant, the most open-minded, the most loving, the most accepting of all the kinds of music in rock’n’roll. So it was a great moment."

This is a recent movie starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal
Summary
-Keller Dover is a contractor with his own business. On Thanksgiving, his daughter Anna and her friend Joy disappear without a trace. The only lead is on an old rusted-out RV that was seen in the premises of where they disappeared. When the police investigate, the detective heading the investigation, Det. Loki, arrests the driver of the RV, one Alex Jones, but releases him due to lack of evidence. Fully convinced that Alex is the one responsible for his daughter's disappearance, Keller takes the law into his own hands and proceeds to try and beat the answer out of Alex.

Cast
-Hugh Jackman: Keller Dover
-Jake Gyllenhaal: Det. Loki
-Viola Davis: Nancy Birch
-Terrence Howard: Franklin Birch
-Maria Bello: Grace Dover
-Melissa Leo: Holly Jones
-Paul Dano: Alex Jones
-Dylan Minnette: Ralph Dover
-Zoe Soul: Eliza Birch
-Erin Gerasimovich: Anna Dover
-Kyla-Drew: Joy Birch

-Len Cariou: Father Patrick Dunn

Did You Know?
-During the scene where Holly makes Keller drink a tainted substance to find out where his daughter is strongly resembles a scene from the 1988 film The Vanishing and the 1993 US remake The Vanishing, where a character searching for his missing girlfriend is forced to drink a heavily drugged coffee by the kidnapper in order to be taken to where she is
-In one of the original cuts of the movie, Hugh Jackman was supposed to remain missing, never to be discovered by the police. This was deemed too bleak for the movie
-During the scene where Holly asks Keller to drink a little more was improvised. She thought Hugh Jackman wasn't drinking enough of the substance to be believable
-The symbols on Loki's hands are zodiac signs-Leo, Scorpio, Aries, Virgo. Jake Gyllenhaal starred in the movie Zodiac

Run to the Hills: Iron Maiden, The Authorized Biography by Mick Wall

If you're a big "Up the Irons" fan, and love listening to Maiden, this is the book you need to read! This book is a biography on the band where the various band members, both past and present, managers, staff members and others weigh in on what made this band stand out from the rest. Each chapter talks to a band member or about a band member, managers, producers, etc.
Also, despite the fact that each chapter covers a different band member or person who worked with the band, the chapters still tell the story of how Iron Maiden came to be, such as what album was being done at that time, what tour was being done, etc.

Steve Harris
-Birth name: Stephen Percy Harris
-DOB: 3/12/1956
-Where: Leytonstone, London, England
-Spouse: Lorraine Harris, Emma Harris
-Kids: Lauren, Kerry, Faye, George, Maisie, Stanley
-This is, not shockingly, the first chapter in the book. This chapter is all about the founding member of Maiden-Steve Harris. Each chapter is like a biography within a biography, in the sense that each chapter tells about that particular album, band member or event at that particular time. With Steve, he grew up the oldest of four kids and the only boy, so, in his words, "I grew up in a house surrounded by women".

Steve Harris and partner Emma Harris

Also, drums were the instrument he originally had his eye on. But growing up in the East End, houses tended to be small and he had nowhere to put them. So he switched to bass, but needed to learn how to play a guitar first. After two unsuccessful stints in local bands called Gypsy's Kiss and Smiler, he decided to form his own band, one that would play his heavy-on-time-changes music, heavily progressive rock influenced. Shockingly, the first thing that Steve Harris was passionate about was football (soccer). He became a fan of West Ham after he and a friend went to a West Ham game when they were nine. His father was a strong Leyton Orient supporter. After that, Steve trained hard to become a footballer, but sadly discovered there was a lot of hard work that went along with it. He says that he enjoyed playing soccer for fun and nowadays, he and some of the Maiden crew gear up in soccer gear and play a friendly game of soccer in the downtime from touring, a team called Maiden FC.

He talks about the early versions of Iron Maiden and how when he hired Dave Murray, he discovered this guy was a miracle-not only was he a good guitarist, but he had something that not very many rockstars today have- a kind, gentle charm, very quiet personality, a strong sense of teamwork and best of all, no ego!! Unfortunately after a fallout with then singer Dennis Wilcock, Steve was forced to let go of his miracle guitar player and singer and for the six months that Steve broke up Iron Maiden, Dave or "Davey" as he's often known by, went to join his best friend Adrian Smith's band Urchin. After a while, Steve called back Davey and he returned in a heartbeat, but was always worried he'd be fired, so he kept his mouth shut and plowed on

Dave Murray
-Birth name: David Michael Murray
-DOB: 12/23/1956
-Where: Edmonton, London, England
-Spouse: Tamar Murray
-Kids: Tasha Murray
-This guy is like the model of what guitar players should be-kind, gentle, quiet personality, no ego, none of this "I'm-a-rockstar-and-I'm-better-than-you" crap with him. The only time he abandoned his quiet personality was in the 1990s, after Bruce left. The departure of their singer left a bitter taste in everyone's mouth and a sour mood over their heads. It was Dave who finally stood up and said something to the effect of "Why should we quit just because he did? We'll find another singer." He was quite angry and this shocked everyone, including Steve, because in all the years they had known Dave, they never knew him to raise his voice or be angry. This gave everyone, including bassist Steve Harris, who was under a lot of strain from singer departing to going through a nasty divorce, a sudden boom of energy and positivity. They all cheered and starting getting down to work finding a new vocalist. After getting the boot from early Iron Maiden because of a miscommunication between him, then singer Dennis Wilcock and drummer Doug Sampson, Dave was let go, only to join his friend Adrian Smith's band Urchin for six months. Dave grew up with a younger sister named Janet and an older sister named Pauline. He says that he finds it weird that Iron Maiden posters are hanging in the classrooms of his sister Pauline's school when fans find out that their teacher's older brother is the guitarist in the band.
Dave Murray and wife Tamar

Proud father Dave and daughter Tasha
He grew up poor and his mother worked various cleaning jobs while his father was sidelined by a debilitating disease. Growing up poor, they moved around a lot, staying in Salvation Army shelters to avoid his dad's nasty moods. He says he had to have attended at least ten schools by the time he was 14. Also, he was constantly labeled with the label "new kid" and forced into defending himself. He learned to box as a way of defense. Like Steve, football was Dave's first love. He played sports like Steve, cricket and football. He also had a short stint as a skinhead, wearing all the required gear-Doc Marten boots, skinny jeans and the crop top hair do. He didn't like the violence that went along with it so he did a 360 and became a hippie. He started listening to Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Free, etc. and growing his hair long. He also started playing the guitar and became the envy of people he knew at school. He said that when he made a bit of money playing music, he wanted to buy his parents a nice house so they wouldn't have to move around anymore. He didn't know how long it would last, but he said he would be able to rest assured knowing he did something nice for them. Suffice to say, his mother is still living in that house.

Paul Di'Anno
-Birth name: Paul Andrews
-DOB: 5/17/1958
-Where: Chingford, London, England
-He grew up heavily influenced by punk-The Clash, The Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, etc. When he joined the band, his raspy vocals lent a punk edge to the music, making it almost punk metal. He grew up in Chingford, in London, with a group of about ten kids from both of his mother's marriages. He was the oldest child and he says that it's been said the oldest children are always the most mad. Outside of Iron Maiden, he has a band called Battlezone

Dennis Stratton & Clive Burr
-Birth name: Dennis William Stratton
-DOB: 10/9/1952
-Where: Canning Town, London, Enaldn
-Birth name: Clive Burr
-DOB: 3/8/1957
-Where: East Ham, London, England
-DOD: 3/12/2013
-Where: London, England (multiple sclerosis)
-These chapters cover these two members. Dennis Stratton was a short-lived guitarist in Iron Maiden. Unlike the rest of the guys, who were into progressive rock and metal, Dennis was more into bands like The Doobie Brothers, The Eagles, 10cc and others. He made the terrible mistake of taking Steve's song "Phantom of the Opera" and turning it into something that sounded like Queen would make. Instead of the so-called "blood and thunder epic" Steve had made "Phantom of the Opera" as, Dennis tweaked it and Steve described the new tweaked version as "Bohemian Rhapsody gone bad". He was furious!

-Clive Burr was the drummer for the band, from 1980, when they made their debut album, Iron Maiden, all the way through 1982, The Number of the Beast. By then, Clive seemed to be getting more partying in than focusing on the gigs at hand. Prior to joining Maiden, Clive had drummed with Samson, a hard rock band briefly competing with Iron Maiden for gigs. When Burr left Samson to join Maiden, the then drummer for Maiden, Barry Purkis, going by the ridiculous moniker Thunderstick, took up the drum seat in Samson.

Rod Smallwood & Andy Taylor
-Birth name: Roderick Charles Smallwood
-DOB: 2/17/1950
-Where: Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England
-Birth name: Andy Taylor
-DOB: 2/11/1950
-Where: Newcastle, England
-Both Rod and Andy have a lot in common. They both attended Trinity University at Cambridge, Rod one year ahead of Andy, they both have policemen as fathers. The only differences between them is that Rod is more band shirt, jeans, gymshoes and leather jacket while Andy looks more like the type of guy to find working in an office in a London bank rather than working with a metal band. But when they come together, their minds work as one. Rod handles the front of shop stuff while Andy typically handles the finances, even though Rod is also the type to worry over finances just as much as Andy would. Rod had gone into managing bands while in college, but after a particularly bad experience managing Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, he was completely against managing a band ever again. Until he met Iron Maiden. After becoming the manager of Iron Maiden, he was able to, along with the help of his business partner Andy Taylor, make Maiden one of the biggest bands in metal. In 1979, after breaking off with Steve Harley, he attended university to get a degree in law when he first received a demo tape of Iron Maiden, which convinced him to go back into music management

-Birth name: Paul Bruce Dickinson
-DOB: 8/7/1958
-Where: Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England
-Spouse: Jane Dickinson (1983-1987), Paddy Bowden (1990-present)
-Kids: Kia Dickinson, Austin Dickinson, Griffin Dickinson
-Born Paul Bruce Dickinson, he was born in the mining town of Worksop, in Nottinghamshire, essentially Robin Hood country. His parents, Bruce Dickinson Sr and Sonia Hartley-Dickinson were just 16 and 17 when they gave birth to Bruce. They were virtually penniless and sent the young child to live with his maternal grandparents. His grandmother hated him from the word go, because she said he reminded her of his father and the reason her daughter was taken away. Six years after Bruce was born, along comes his sister, Helen. He feels completely estranged from his sister because he says that she was a planned birth while he felt like an outsider who didn't belong.

He went to a variety of schools, such as Manor Top Primary, Sharrow Vale Junior, and finally Oundle. It was there that he started developing an interest in military history, which he put to good use on the bullies. He was heavily bullied and his grandfather taught him to never take crap from anyone. Stand up for yourself. When he taught young Bruce about self defense, he also had to teach Bruce when to hit and when not to hit because he went around school, decking everyone. What inspired him to go into music, however, was hearing "Child in Time" by Deep Purple filtering out of a student's room. Originally, he wanted to play drums. But, having no room to put them, he started with bongos. Once, he heard a student attempting to sing "Let It Be" by the Beatles and was struggling badly. He stepped in to bolster this classmate's voice and when he sang, he quickly discovered he had a unique voice. Not only could he hit high notes, but every note in between. He attended Queen Mary University in London, which satisfied his parents with him getting an education, but also confused them because he had never been to the city before. It was there he attempted to get a career in music going. He went through several bands-Shots, Styx, Speed and finally Samson. He landed in the band as the front man.

NWOBHM
-Standing for the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal", this ridiculous moniker was coined to a time during the late 1970s and early 1980s when Britain seen a large boom in hard rock and heavy metal bands or bands perceived to be hard rock and heavy metal coming out of Britain. The band that seemed to lead the pack was Iron Maiden. Chasing fast on their heels, however, was Samson, a blend of hard rock and blues rock and Def Leppard, a teenaged five-man band from the northern steel mill town of Sheffield. Since things with then singer Paul Di'Anno were going south, the band needed a new singer. And fast.
Iron Maiden, 1979

Samson

Def Leppard, 1979
While at the Reading Festival one year, Steve Harris and Rod Smallwood went to see Samson's set. They were impressed by the vocal acrobatics of their singer, Bruce Dickinson, who had been, unfortunately, given the nickname "Bruce Bruce", mirroring an old Monty Python sketch and resulting from a miscommunication. They had Bruce audition at the festival and then had another audition at a studio in London. Right at the start, Bruce said "I don't want to do what the other guy did. If that's the direction you want, you may as well find another singer." They had him sing a song or two and when he came down to the studio and sang, it was like something had clicked. Rod booked some time in the studio for the new band, because he suspected Maiden had just found their new singer. As for the other bands, some of those bands didn't last, like Ethel the Frog, Wytchfinde. But some of those bands hit a rough patch and still came out of that era unscathed, still performing today, like Diamond Head, Tygers of Pan Tang, Saxon, Motorhead (the band might not be around anymore, but their music still is), Angel Witch, Venom, Girlschool (a basic female Motorhead), Raven, Praying Mantis

Eddie
-This monstrous creation was created by Derek Riggs. The only album he didn't create the cover for was 1992's Fear of the Dark. That macabre cover was created by an unknown artist named Melvyn Grant, who designed the band's mascot as a tree-dwelling, Nosferatu-type creature. This lovable member of the band has graced everything the band has ever put out, from hats to keychains, to t-shirts to album covers and more. He's essentially part of the band and there is usually no bigger thrill than when "Eddie" makes his appearance on stage, dressed in a way related to the theme of that album, whether it be as an Egyptian pharaoh overlooking his kingdom on Powerslave, a tortured soul after a session in the electric chair on The X Factor, a Mayan warrior on The Book of Souls. It's down to one thing-Eddie is and will forever be a part of Iron Maiden

Blaze Bayley
-Birth name: Bayley Cook
-DOB: 5/29/1963
-Where: Birmingham, England
-He had originally started out in a group called Child's Play, but then moved on to a band called Wolfsbane, a punk-metal band based in his hometown of Birmingham. Wolfsbane had actually supported Maiden on a few dates of their 1992-1993 Fear on the Road tour, supporting their 1992 Fear of the Dark album. Steve said he thought that Blaze had a great voice. At first, worries about his party-hard nature came into question and the one who brought that up was Mr. Excess himself, Nicko McBrain. Blaze grew up in Birmingham, England and grew up in a home that wasn't complete, since he hates using the term "broken home". He shot to success with Wolfsbane and when he sent in an audition tape of his singing to Maiden, Nicko thought "That's Iron Maiden right there!" He thought Blaze's voice was perfect. It is unknown to this day why he goes by Blaze. He just said that when he first got into music, everyone came up with stupid nicknames, because it was the era of glam rock. People always thought that his first name, Bayley, was actually his last and someone just gave him the nickname Blaze, so it became "Blaze Bayley". He said he even calls himself that. He would go on to make two albums with Maiden-1995's The X Factor and 1998's Virtual XI. In late 1999, plans were being made to bring Bruce back, along with Adrian.

Most sites about Blaze will say that he was kicked out. Read this book and get the real story. He was kindly let go because he was having continual voice problems, most likely from the strain of having to sing for Maiden frequently. He says singing for Maiden is hard and that unlike a guitar, bass or drums, he can't simply unstrap his voice and put it in a box at night. So he was kindly let go because of this, nothing bad. But just because of his voice going out a lot. But Steve and the guys say that he was amazing, that he gave it his all every night and they were thankful for him. Blaze figured Bruce would come back. A lot of music critics blast the two Blaze-era albums for their dark, adult-oriented, almost X-rated content. But one only has to understand the goings on at the time. During the making of The X Factor, Steve was going through a nasty divorce from his high school sweetheart Lorraine and was now taking care of his four children-Lauren, Kerry, Faye and George. Not only that, but the singer in the band he's had a tight control of for over 10 years just leaves. That's a lot of stress. Thankfully, Steve's second-in-command, Dave Murray gave him the strength to go on. Dave just up and said, one day at a Bruce-less rehearsal, something to the effect of "Why should we quit just because he quit? Bollocks to him! We're not quitting just because he did. We'll just find a new singer!" This luckily gave everyone the get up and go to move on. Blaze says that he is, to this day, still on very good terms with Maiden because when he left, he said something to the effect of "I won't badmouth you in the press the way Bruce did." Blaze was actually thankful for his time in Maiden because it helped him develop leadership skills, songwriting skills and now Blaze is a highly successful musician in his own right, with his own solo band, and they usually have a habit of breaking into Maiden songs, both from his time with them and Bruce-era and Paul Di'Anno-era.

Adrian Smith
-Birth name: Adrian Frederick Smith
-DOB: 2/27/1957
-Where: Hackney, London, England
-Spouse: Natalie Dufresne-Smith
-Kids: Dylan, Natasha, Brittany
-He was one of the later-to-join members of the band. He joined right after Dennis Stratton had been booted from the band. He knew they had contacted him because he suspected Adrian lurked in the shadows. He grew up with a brother named Patrick and a sister named Kathleen. His father was a decorator from Homerton and he was good friends with Dave Murray. Adrian and Dave would go to parties and play "Highway Star" by Deep Purple so much that it would, to quote Adrian "drive everyone round the bend." When Dave left Urchin to join back up with Iron Maiden, he felt a slight pang of jealousy, wondering would his chance at success ever come? And sure enough, it did. Dave had apparently suggested Adrian Smith as the replacement for Dennis Stratton. It's said that indecisiveness should be Adrian's middle name, since he can never make up his mind and that when he and Dave are on stage, they are like two opposites-Adrian, with his head down and haunted expression, sending out Hendrix-inspired riffs and Dave, constantly smiling, whirling his blonde hair around and sending out breakneck speed riffs. Adrian would first taste the music bug with a band of glam-rock influenced kids called Broadway Brats. Then he would move up a rung and form a band called Urchin, in which he would sing lead and play guitar (Yes, Adrian Smith CAN SING! To get a good taste of this, watch the live concert on the film Flight 666 and get to the song "Wasted Years" when Bruce says "Adrian" and Adrian starts singing the chorus of "Wasted Years". It's the same way on the soundtrack for the film).

Brave New World
-This was the first album after the reunion of the band. When Adrian found out there would be three guitarists in the band and that Steve had plans for that, not shockingly Adrian was surprised. He said something to the effect of "Three guitarists?!? It'll never work!" Steve proved him wrong. Not only did it work out, but the three of them-Dave, Adrian and Janick-are called the Three Amigos because of how close they are. Also, the band were cranking out songs left, right and center. And Bruce felt better about things after his solo jaunt because it allowed him to exorcise some inner demons and with this new album, he has at least two songs partially credited to him, with help from Dave, Janick, Adrian or Steve.

Dance of Death
-This was only the second album with Janick Gers installed on guitar. And already he was helping out on songs. The songs on this album are more upbeat, more everyone-oriented than the dark, adult-oriented Blaze-era stuff. It's said that the low point of the album was "Gates of Tomorrow". I say crap!! That is a great song! That is actually one of my favorite songs on there, in addition to "Paschendale", "Rainmaker", "No More Lies".

Janick Gers
-Birth name: Janick Robert Gers
-DOB: 1/27/1957
-Where: Hartlepool, England
-Spouse: Sandra Gers
-Kids: Sian Gers, Dylan Gers
-His father was in the Polish Navy, then switched over the British Royal Navy and then the Merchants Navy. According to him, Hartlepool was and is a big dock city, where a lot of Polish people live. He is the oldest of three kids, a younger brother and sister. He started out with a cheap acoustic guitar and didn't get his first real electric guitar until he was 18. It was a white Fender Stratocaster, which he continues to play today. He was in a variety of bands, starting with a close to unknown band called White Spirit, who got lumped in with the whole NWOBHM movement. Then he moved on to Ian Gillan's solo band, Gillan. It was in the late 1980s, early 1990s, that he had attended school for a degree in Humanities. Things weren't looking so good musically. But then he had a saving grace. Bruce Dickinson had begun working on his first solo album, which was to be titled Tattooed Millionaire and he wanted Janick to play on it.

Uncle Sam
-Basically this chapter just talks about when Iron Maiden finally hit it big in America and how most religious groups wanted to persecute this band, for "tainting the youth of America" with their supposed Devil worship lyrics. The band was constantly being accused of being Satanists and Devil worshippers, despite the fact that Nicko McBrain is a fully committed Christian and guitarists Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers all wear crosses around their necks.

Nicko McBrain
-Birth name: Michael Henry McBrain
-DOB: 6/5/1952
-Where: Hackney, London, England
-Spouse: Rebecca McBrain
-Kids: Justin McBrain, Nicholas McBrain
-As a child, he was always called Nicky, because he carried around a teddy bear he named Nicholas. The only time his birth name, Michael, was used was when he was in trouble. He started out in a band called McKitty, but then moved on to Chapman Whitney Streetwalkers, and finally Trust, an artsy French socio=political metal band. How he came to get the nickname "Nicko" is he was in a band called The Wells Street Blues Band and Billy Day, one of the guitarists, introduced him to Dick Asher, head of CBS Records, as Neeko, his Italian drummer. He decided to change it to Nicko to sound more English. His first album with Iron Maiden was 1983's Piece of Mind. Nicko even had a full songwriting credit on 2003's Dance of Death, the song "New Frontier", which deals with the issue of human cloning. Nicko was always known as Mr. Excess, because he was the resident party animal. When Blaze came into the band in late 1994, Nicko worried about Blaze's hard-partying nature. It was Dave Murray who pointed out "Wait a sec, Nick. We hired you". Nicko laughed and said "You're right"

Virtual Realty
-This chapter basically covers the end time of Blaze's time in the band. It talks about the 1998 Virtual XI album. Like all music bios, it talks about each song and during this time, it was when Blaze Bayley was let go from the band due to continuing vocal problems. It wasn't his fault; singing for Maiden can hard. But when plans were being laid out for Bruce to come back to the band, it was clear that Blaze would probably go. To this day, Blaze Bayley and Iron Maiden are on good terms and are good friends. There were never any cross words between the two. Blaze says that his time in Maiden has taught him to take more of a leadership role (no doubt inspired by Steve), write songs more and take more of the songwriting and leadership duties. He has his own highly successful solo career and there are times when he has reunited with his former band Wolfsbane. The Virtual XI album was often cited as being slightly lighter in content than its predecessor, but still retaining a slightly adult, X-rated type content to it. But a lot of the songs are lengthy, including "Angel and the Gambler", whose video shows the band playing on an asteroid, the ultimate concert and splices in clips from Ed Hunter: The Game and clips of the band playing poker backstage, while a leather longrider coat-wearing Blaze goes up to the bar, Clint Eastwood-style.

Rock in Rio
-This chapter is nothing more than just a chapter about playing at the large multi-day music festival in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. They played it multiple times and in this chapter they recall all the times they played there and how the craziest fans seem to be the South American ones. Those are the fans who go absolutely crazy for Maiden

Rock in Rio DVD
-Not much to this. It's talking about a DVD of them being in Rio very recently.

Clive Burr
-This chapter talks about the band doing some charity gigs in support of Clive Aid, a foundation dedicated to finding a cure, hopefully, and raising awareness about multiple sclerosis, which Clive Burr suffered from and died of.
2002 Collection
-This just refers to specialist collections of things they did.

Martin Birch
-Basically, this guy helped produce all their albums. It was considered from day 1 that they wanted him to produce them because of the long, successful list of people he's produced for. Steve actually worried about whether Birch wanted to do their music. Steve thought Martin would think "Who are these guys? Why would I want to produce them?" But Martin shocked them all by saying that he thought Maiden's music was perfect. To drive that point home further, a visit to Ritchie Blackmore in Long Island, New York, where he lives, did just that. Ritchie thought the band was fantastic and played the band's first album. Martin said "I can do better production than that!" And from then on, Martin has produced nearly every one of Maiden's albums. But, of course, there was a time when Martin would want to retire because he was spending every second of energy on Maiden. By the time Martin would retire, Steve, who had learned enough about producing by hanging out with Martin in the engineer's room, would take over the production of the albums, the cutting and splicing of live albums and DVDs, videos, etc. Nowadays, it's almost all down to Steve doing the production work, so essentially Steve is the busiest man in metal!

Bruce Dickinson is hinting at a new solo album and a new album by Maiden!!!!!!!!! Which means one thing: WORLD TOUR!!!!!!
The singer known worldwide as The Air Raid Siren had hinted at the idea of a new solo album and more music from Iron Maiden when he was in London promoting his yet to be released autobiography, What Does This Button Do?

When asked by fans how the legendary British heavy metal band from the East End had managed to outlive most other metal bands, he compared the band to Goldilocks and the Three Bears. "The porridge has to be just right. We’re fragile little organisms, really. Even though we have loads of trucks and make lots of noise and things like that, the relationships in the band are quite fragile."

He further explained that "We're all born of the same mothership, which is Iron Maiden, and our loyalty is primarily to Maiden and probably then to each others. Which makes life really kind of easy in terms of getting on with your fellow bandmates because you give everybody space. ‘Cause we realize that we're all there together to do the same thing – which is to deliver an amazing Iron Maiden show or an amazing Iron Maiden record, or do whatever it takes to do that. So that's the secret."
